3D Visualization
The 3D Visualization tools provide advanced viewing capabilities for volumetric image data, allowing users to review image series in three-dimensional space.
These tools are available when the selected image series supports volumetric rendering.
Overview
3D visualization supports the following capabilities:
- Volume rendering
- Multi-planar review of volumetric data
- Interactive rotation
- Zoom and pan
- Window/level adjustment
- Crosshair-based interaction (where supported)
- Slab thickness adjustment (where supported)
These capabilities assist with advanced image review and visualization of anatomical structures.
Opening a 3D View
To display a 3D view:
- Open a study containing a supported volumetric image series
- Select the desired series from the Study Panel
- Select a 3D or advanced visualization layout or tool
- The selected series is rendered in the active viewport
Volume Rendering
Volume rendering displays the selected dataset as a three-dimensional representation.
Users can interact with the rendered volume to review anatomy from different perspectives.
Supported interactions include:
- Rotation
- Zoom
- Pan
- Window/level adjustment
Interaction
Rotation
- Click and drag within the 3D viewport to rotate the volume
- Release the mouse button to stop rotation
Zoom and Pan
- Use Zoom to adjust magnification
- Use Pan to reposition the volume within the viewport
Window/Level
Window/level adjustments modify image brightness and contrast.
This can improve visualization of different tissue densities and structures.
Presets and Rendering Options
Predefined rendering presets or display options may be available depending on system configuration.
These presets allow rapid adjustment of the rendered volume for common viewing scenarios.
Relationship to MPR
3D visualization may be used in combination with Multi-Planar Reconstruction (MPR).
- MPR provides axial, sagittal, and coronal views
- 3D visualization provides a reconstructed volumetric view
Together, these tools support comprehensive review of volumetric datasets.
Reset View
Use Reset View to restore the default state of the active 3D viewport.
Reset View may restore:
- Rotation
- Position
- Magnification
- Window/level
Behavior Notes
3D visualization is available only for image series that support volumetric rendering.
3D rendering performance may vary depending on dataset size, workstation hardware, browser, and network conditions.
Use 3D visualization together with MPR to improve spatial understanding of anatomical structures.
Troubleshooting
If 3D visualization is not available or does not behave as expected:
- Confirm the selected series supports volumetric rendering
- Confirm the study has fully loaded
- Verify browser compatibility
- Use Reset View
- Reload the viewer if necessary
